How to choose a motorcycle tour operator

Operators differ more in how they run a trip than in the roads they ride. The photos look alike; the contracts do not. Ask these before you pay.

The bike

  1. Which exact model and year will I ride? A good answer names the model and a fleet age. “Similar” is not an answer.
  2. What is the insurance excess, in numbers? The amount you pay if the bike is damaged, and whether it can be reduced for a fee. It is one of the most common reasons a good trip ends badly.
  3. What does the deposit cover and when is it returned?

The trip

  1. What is the maximum group size, and the guide-to-rider ratio?
  2. Is there a support vehicle, and does it carry luggage, spares and a passenger seat?
  3. What is included and, more importantly, what is not? Fuel, meals, entry fees, ferries, airport transfers, and tips are the usual gaps.
  4. What are the daily distances, and is there a rest day?

The company

  1. How long have they operated, and who owns the bikes? Some sellers of tours own no bikes and subcontract everything.
  2. What licence and permit do I need, and will they check? An operator that does not ask to see your licence may not be checking the rest carefully either. Treat it as a warning sign, not proof. Licence and permit rules vary by country and by your nationality: confirm the current rule with gov.uk or the relevant embassy, not only with the operator.
  3. What happens if I have to cancel, and what happens if they do? Get the terms in writing before the deposit.
  4. Who do I call when something goes wrong at 11pm? Ask for the process, not a promise.
  5. Can I speak to a rider from a recent departure? Independent reviews help; a direct conversation helps more.
