Guided, self-guided or rental: which format fits your trip

Most motorcycle trips you can book fall into one of three formats. The right one depends on how much you want handled for you, how many of you there are, and how you feel about riding unknown roads without a guide ahead.

Guided tour

A guide rides with the group, a route is fixed in advance, and accommodation, most meals and often a support vehicle are included. You ride your own bike or one supplied by the operator.

Choose it when the destination has real logistics: border crossings, permits, altitude, language, or roads where a breakdown far from help matters. Choose it when you want to ride, not organise.

What to check: group size, whether a support vehicle carries luggage, what the price excludes (fuel, entry fees, flights, insurance excess), and the guide’s language.

Self-guided tour

The operator books the accommodation and gives you a route, a bike if needed, and a phone number. You ride alone or with your own group, at your own pace.

Choose it when you are comfortable navigating, the roads are well mapped, and you would rather stop where you like than where the group stops. It usually costs less than guided.

What to check: what happens on a breakdown, whether the route is supplied as GPS files, and how flexible the daily distances are.

Rental only

You hire a bike and do everything else yourself.

Choose it when you know the region, are joining friends, or want a few days on a bike within a longer trip. It is usually the cheapest format, and the one with the most to organise yourself.

What to check: the deposit and the insurance excess in numbers, mileage limits, whether luggage and a lock are included, one-way fees, and the age and condition of the fleet.

Deciding

Three questions settle most cases:

1. Would you be comfortable fixing a flat tyre, alone, two hours from the nearest town, without a common language? If not, guided.
2. Is the point of the trip the riding, or the place? If the place, self-guided gives you time in it.
3. Is the bike the only thing you are missing? Then rental.

Whatever you choose, book directly with the operator. This site lists and compares; it never sits between you and the company you ride with.
